Frequently asked questions

  • What kind of accommodation can I expect on this tour?

The tour includes a mix of simple hotels (4 nights), participation camping (27 nights), permanent tented camps (1 night), full-service camping (2 nights), hostels (3 nights, multi-share), and basic bush camping (2 nights). Camping facilities vary, being generally good but basic in some places, often with small restaurants/bars, flush toilets, and showers (though warm water isn't guaranteed). Tents are 2-person safari canvas with insect netting. Hostels in Swakopmund are dormitory-style (7-16 people) with shared private bathrooms, and gender-separated rooms are not guaranteed. Simple hotels in Nairobi, Windhoek, and Cape Town offer twin rooms. Please note some campsites in national parks are open to wildlife, requiring caution.
  • Are there specific details about bush camping in the Okavango Delta?

Yes, the Okavango Delta experience involves 'bush camping' on remote islands without facilities like running water or formal toilets. Toilets will be of the 'dig and bury' variety. This is considered the most basic night of the trip, offering an incredible, close-to-nature wildlife experience where elephants and other animals may come close to camp. Safety instructions from your safari guides must be followed.
  • What types of transportation are used on this trip?

This trip primarily uses a larger 24-seat overland adventure vehicle (Lando) for most journeys, offering high seating for scenic views and wildlife spotting. For safaris in Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater, private 6-7 seat 4x4 safari vehicles with sliding windows and pop-up roofs are used for better maneuverability and wildlife viewing (groups may split into multiple vehicles). Minibuses are used for transport in Zanzibar, and a public ferry for the crossing to/from Zanzibar. Traditional mokoros (dugout canoes) are used for birdwatching in the Okavango Delta.
  • What are the features of the Lando (overland adventure vehicle)?

The Lando is a well-equipped 24-seat vehicle featuring accessible storage for main luggage, day pack storage, an onboard safety box for valuables, front viewing windows and large sliding windows, reclining seats, a fully equipped mobile kitchen, access to a 250L drinking water tank, air-conditioning, and USB charging ports at each seat. Please note, Landos do not have on-board bathrooms.
  • How challenging is the travel physically?

This journey is not considered physically demanding in terms of strenuous activities; however, it involves long drives and can include periods of travel on poor quality, bumpy roads. Despite this, many travelers find the diverse African landscape, culture, and wildlife make the experience worthwhile.
  • Are international flights included in the tour price?

No, international flights are generally not included in the price of this tour. However, baggage allowances and restrictions vary by airline, so it's recommended to contact your airline for the most up-to-date information and check in online in advance.
  • What health information should I be aware of before traveling?

We recommend contacting your family physician or local travel clinic at least one month before departure for current health information. Travelers should carry a basic first-aid kit and hand sanitizers. Medical facilities are basic in these countries. It is compulsory to show a valid Yellow Fever Certificate if traveling from or transiting for more than 12 hours through a Yellow Fever endemic country for destinations like Botswana, Kenya, Malawi, Namibia, South Africa, Tanzania, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. Kenya and Uganda require it from all travelers regardless of origin. Malaria is present in some regions; consider prophylactic medication and insect repellent.
  • Are there any special itinerary notes or conditions?

Yes, there are a few important notes. Due to high demand for accommodation in parks, alternative accommodations may be arranged outside the park. For departures over the next 6-8 months, travelers will not be staying at the Dqae Qare San Lodge & Camp and will overnight at nearby accommodations. There is an optional 'Zanzibar Express' upgrade for less travel time to Zanzibar, which includes a flight and an extra night. The tour is primarily camping-based with some basic hotel/hostel stays.
  • Is there an option for less travel time to Zanzibar?

Yes, you can book the 'Zanzibar Express' upgrade, which includes a flight and an extra night in Zanzibar, reducing overland travel time to the island.
  • Is there a departure tax?

A departure tax of USD20 may be applicable, and it might already be included in your international air ticket.
  • Who should I contact in case of an emergency during the tour?

In an emergency, first contact the local representative (for South Africa: +27 713823286). If you cannot get an immediate answer, leave a detailed message. For general support, you can also call the global sales team numbers provided in your pre-departure information. If you have an arrival transfer booked and face flight schedule changes within 48 hours, you must call the emergency contact to advise of your new arrival information to ensure your transfer can be rearranged.
  • Is an emergency fund required for this trip?

Yes, it is strongly recommended to have access to at least an additional USD $200 (or equivalent) as an 'emergency' fund, to be used for unforeseen circumstances that might require a change to the planned route.
  • Who leads the tour group and what is the level of guest participation?

The tour is led by two Chief Experience Officers (CEOs) who serve as head guide/cook and driver, along with certified safari guides, camp crew, and local guides. CEOs manage the group, provide information, offer suggestions, and organize meal preparation. Guest participation is an essential part of the safari experience, with groups divided into tasks such as kitchen duty, setting up camp, and cleaning. All camping equipment (except sleeping bag and pillow) is provided.
  • What is the typical group size for this tour?

The maximum group size for this tour is 22 travelers, with an average group size of 19.

A minimum coverage of USD 200,000 for medical expenses, emergency evacuation, and repatriation is required. It is also highly recommended that the policy covers personal liability, cancellation, curtailment, and loss of luggage and personal effects. Ensure coverage for all included adventure activities.
  • What meals are included in the tour price and how are they prepared?

The tour price includes 36 breakfasts, 32 lunches, and 26 dinners. All included meals are prepared from fresh local produce by our cook, with ingredients sourced from local markets and supermarkets. Breakfasts are typically breads and cereals, with occasional warm options. Lunches are light, often sandwiches or salads. Dinners are freshly prepared hot meals, including continental and local dishes. Guests are expected to participate in meal preparation and dishwashing duties on a rotating schedule.
  • What currencies are accepted and what should I know about money exchange?

Various currencies are used across the countries. South African Rand (ZAR) is accepted in South Africa and Namibia. Namibian Dollar (NAD) is equivalent to ZAR in Namibia only. Botswana uses Pula (BWP) for shops, but USD is accepted for activities/drinks. Zambia uses Zambian Kwacha (ZMK), and USD payments are generally not allowed. Malawi uses Kwacha (MWK), and Tanzania/Kenya use Shilling (TZS/KES). Zimbabwe uses USD and ZAR. USD is widely accepted in Malawi, Tanzania, and Kenya, but some supermarkets may only take local currency. Bring ZAR or USD from home for Zimbabwe, as ATMs can be unreliable. USD notes older than 2006 are not accepted. Large USD notes (50/100) are harder to change but offer better rates. USD cash is required for visas at borders. Traveler's cheques are not recommended. Visa/Plus debit cards are most widely accepted; consider bringing both Visa and Mastercard. Credit cards have limited acceptance in major cities (5-10% fee). Be aware of power outages and unreliable ATMs. A combination of foreign currency and debit/credit cards for cash advances is best. Refer to www.xe.com for daily exchange rates.
  • What optional activities are available on this tour?

A wide range of optional activities are available including: Serengeti Balloon Safari, Zanzibar sailing/snorkelling/cultural tours, South Luangwa wildlife safari drives and walking safaris, various Victoria Falls activities (visit, whitewater rafting, helicopter ride, bungee jumping, bridge swing, zipline), Chobe River sunset cruise and safari drive, Okavango Delta doors-off scenic helicopter flight, a walk with the San People, Etosha National Park open vehicle night and day safaris, Swakopmund skydiving/sandboarding/scenic flights/township tours, Namib Desert walks, paddling on the Orange River, Cederberg wine tasting, and several Cape Town activities like Table Mountain cable car/hike, Two Oceans Aquarium, wine tours, and various day tours (Cape Point, Urban Explorer, etc.).
  • What is the tipping etiquette for this tour?

Tipping is expected, though not compulsory, and serves as an appreciation for exceptional service. It's an important source of income for those in the tourism industry. It's suggested for group members to contribute anonymously into an envelope and present it together. Guidelines (per person): CEO: $5-8 USD/day; Supply Crew (Serengeti): $2-5 USD/day; Local guides: $2-3 USD/day; Safari Guide/Driver: $2-3 USD/day; Restaurant Staff: 10-15% of bill; Okavango Delta polers: 50-100 BWP (Botswana Pula).
  • What are the main highlights of this tour?

The main highlights of this tour include swimming in the turquoise waters of Zanzibar, searching for the 'big five' across Africa's national parks, experiencing the majestic spray of Victoria Falls, catching a sunset at the Fish River Canyon, camping along the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater, meeting the Naro San people on the fringes of the Kalahari Desert, and exploring cosmopolitan Cape Town.
  • What safety and security precautions should I be aware of in cities and during the tour?

Be cautious of con men and safari touts. In Zanzibar, dress modestly due to it being a Muslim society, and single female travelers should be wary of 'beach boys'. Generally, use a neck wallet for valuables, leave jewelry at home, and lock luggage. Group leaders can amend itineraries for safety. Exercise good judgment for optional activities. Stay in small groups and use taxis at night in cities. Water-based activities should be accompanied by guides. Swimming and snorkeling are at your own risk. The use of drones in national parks is prohibited.
  • Are there any photography restrictions?

  • What is Planeterra Foundation and its role in the tour?

Planeterra International Foundation is a non-profit organization that leverages tourism to create income for local communities. They develop and support community-owned businesses that empower Indigenous people, women, and youth, and protect the environment. The tour operator is Planeterra's largest corporate donor, covering operating costs, meaning 100% of traveler donations go directly to Planeterra projects. Travelers are invited to participate in the 'Dollar-a-day Program' to support these initiatives.
  • Are there any specific rules or codes of conduct for the tour?

Yes, illegal drugs are strictly not tolerated, as they contravene local laws and put the group at risk. The exploitation of prostitutes is also contrary to the tour's philosophy of respect. Chief Experience Officers (CEOs) have the authority to expel any group member found with drugs or engaging with prostitutes.
  • Are laundry facilities available on this trip?

Laundry can be done at most campsites if you wish to do your own washing. In Victoria Falls, there is an opportunity to use the Princess Laundry and Sewing Co-op, a local enterprise supported by the tour operator, which provides income for the cooperative members and their families.

As of January 1, 2024, Kenya requires an Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) for all travelers. For Tanzania online visa applications, the tour operator's host information (Name, Email, Mobile No., Address) is provided. For Zimbabwe and Zambia, the Kavango Zambezi Trans-Frontier Conservation Area (Kaza) Uni-Visa (approx. US$50, valid 30 days) is suggested. Malawi may require an e-Visa. Namibia is introducing a mandatory 90-day visa (USD90) on arrival from April 1, 2025 (pre-application recommended). Zanzibar will introduce mandatory Inbound Travel Insurance from October 1, 2024. A Yellow Fever certificate may be required depending on your travel history. It is strongly advised to pre-purchase visas to avoid border delays.

The Lando is equipped with storage, an onboard safety box, reclining seats, a mobile kitchen, a 250L drinking water tank, air-conditioning, and USB charging ports, but no onboard bathrooms.
  • What are the main highlights of the Nairobi to Cape Town Overland Safari?

Key highlights include swimming in the turquoise waters of Zanzibar, looking for the “Big Five” across Africa's national parks, experiencing the spray of Victoria Falls, catching a sunset at the Fish River Canyon, camping along the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater, meeting the Naro San people on the fringes of the Kalahari Desert, and exploring cosmopolitan Cape Town.
  • What is the maximum group size for this tour?

The maximum group size for this tour is 22 travelers, with an average group size of 19.
  • What health advisories should I be aware of for this region?

We recommend consulting your physician at least one month before departure for up-to-date health information, including recommended inoculations. A valid Yellow Fever Certificate is compulsory if traveling from or transiting through a Yellow Fever endemic country for Botswana, Kenya, Malawi, Namibia, South Africa, Tanzania, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. Kenya and Uganda require this certificate from all travelers regardless of origin. Malaria is also present in some regions, so preventative medication and insect repellent are advised.
  • How should I handle currency and money exchange during the tour?

Multiple currencies are used across the visited countries (ZAR, NAD, BWP, ZMK, MWK, TZS, KES, USD). It's highly recommended to bring South African Rand (ZAR) or US Dollars (USD) from your home country, as USD is widely accepted in Malawi, Tanzania, and Kenya, but not in Zambia (ZMK is required). US Dollar notes older than 2006 are not accepted. ATMs are available in major centers but can be unreliable. Credit cards are accepted in major cities but not widely elsewhere and may incur fees. A combination of foreign currency and debit/credit cards for cash advances is best, always bringing more than less.
  • Is travel insurance mandatory for this trip?

Yes, travel insurance is compulsory. It must cover medical expenses, including emergency evacuation and repatriation, with a minimum coverage of USD200,000. Coverage for personal liability, cancellation, curtailment, and loss of luggage/personal effects is also strongly recommended.
  • What is the expected level of participation from travelers in daily tasks?

Traveler participation is an essential part of the safari experience. The group is typically divided into smaller teams for tasks such as kitchen duty (meal preparation and clean-up), setting up tables and chairs, and vehicle cleaning. While Chief Experience Officers (CEOs) prepare meals, travelers are asked to assist with washing up.
  • Who will be leading the tour and what kind of support can I expect?

The tour will be led by two Chief Experience Officers (CEOs) who act as head guides, cooks, and drivers. They provide information, suggest activities, and manage the group. Additionally, there will be certified safari guides/drivers, camp crew, and local guides for specific activities. CEOs will accompany you in the passenger area during wildlife safari drives.
  • What kind of optional activities are available during the tour?

The tour offers a wide range of optional activities throughout the itinerary. These can include wildlife viewing experiences like Serengeti Balloon Safaris or Chobe National Park safari drives, water-based activities such as snorkeling in Zanzibar or paddling on the Orange River, cultural experiences like village walks or spice plantation tours, and adrenaline activities like whitewater rafting, bungee jumping, skydiving, or sandboarding in Victoria Falls and Swakopmund. Specific availability and costs apply.
  • Are there any specific cultural sensitivities or rules I should be aware of?

Yes, particularly in Zanzibar, which is a predominantly Muslim society. Travelers are encouraged to dress modestly, covering knees and shoulders, especially in Stone Town, to avoid causing offense. It's also important to be cautious in cities like Nairobi, Dar es Salaam, and Lusaka; avoid walking alone at night and be wary of con artists. Photography of government buildings or military personnel is prohibited. The use of illegal drugs and engaging with prostitutes are strictly prohibited and can result in expulsion from the tour.
  • Can I do my laundry during the trip?

Laundry facilities are available at most campsites for self-washing. In Victoria Falls, there's an option to use the Princess Laundry and Sewing Co-op, which is supported by the tour operator and helps provide income to the local community.
  • What is the physical activity level of this tour?

This tour has a physical rating of 3 (on a scale of 1-5, where 5 is most challenging). While it's not considered physically demanding, travel can be difficult at times due to long drives and potentially poor road conditions. It involves participation camping, which requires setting up and breaking down tents and assisting with camp duties. There are also opportunities for optional walks and activities.
  • Is there a single supplement fee for solo travelers?

No, our group trips are designed for shared accommodation without a single supplement. Single travelers are paired in twin or multi-share rooms with someone of the same sex. However, on specific nights (Days 32, 33, 39), accommodation is in hostels with multi-share dorms (up to 10 people), and the group may not be divided by gender. Parents or guardians traveling with a minor of a different gender will be accommodated in a private room.
